Global coffee and tea chain Brew and Steep has announced collaborations with four local businesses at two of their most popular locations. These trials are expected to expand depending on the consumer reception, which soft-launched on Tuesday.
Their first store in Cleveland, Ohio worked with local donut company Dough & Co and with Mystery Science Brewing Company to develop a coffee cake cream-filled pastry and a coffee stout, respectively. Their highest-grossing store in Philadelphia collaborated with independent Cracked Bell Winery & Bakery on a tea-infused red blend and donut series.

“Our beans and leaves are too good to be only in our stores,” said Chief Marketing Officer Joel Robinson. “We’re proud of our products, and we wanted to introduce ourselves to new customers.” Brew and Steep has a consumer base of over 10 million customers a week across all international markets, but the three local businesses the company is collaborating with are all independent, single-run stores. Dough & Co can be open for as little as three hours a day depending on available product.
The vetting process was exhaustive, according to one of the fusion coffee designers. “Sustainability is at the heart of our mission,” said Mike Nelson. “We knew we could only form partnerships with local businesses who shared our values, who understood the importance of fairtrade, ethically-sourced ingredients.”

Mystery Science is active in the northeast Ohio community with a portion of their profits going to a new charitable organization each year, while Dough & Co is an active advocate for human rights issues. Cracked Bell is well-known in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas for using only locally-grown ingredients.
Pending the Q3 financial report outs, Brew and Steep is predicted to announce a new set of collaborations on the West Coast and with their popular locations in Austin, Texas. As of now, the reception appears to be positive. “It’s weird,” said one of the donut patrons at the soft launch in Cleveland. “Weird but good.”
